History
Changing lives and breaking the cycle of poverty and abuse for over 40 years.

On a wet, winter day in 1966 Dr. Mineo Katagiri, a minister in the United Church of Christ, and Rube Label, a local business owner, first opened the doors of the First Avenue Service Center. It was little more then a warm, dry room with a coffee pot but it served the purpose of providing a safe refuge for homeless men in Seattle.

Over the past forty years, the center has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of Seattle's growing homeless population. We have developed comprehensive programming which includes case management, assistance finding safe and affordable housing, vocational training, and much more. In keeping with the original vision, we also provide basic human services, such as nutritious meals, a place to shower, laundry facilities, access to phone and computer services, and a secure environment where the homeless can gather their thoughts and revive their spirit.

Our clientele is no longer exclusively male and more and more often, we find ourselves assisting both single women and families. Our programs and services reflect these demographic shifts as does our name change to the Family and Adult Service Center.
